Do you know? Every year at the time of Diwali, emergency rooms are full. Severe burns, fire accidents, injured patients, and critical wounded visit hospitals during festivals. Firecrackers cause air and noise pollution, which it should avoid, but many don’t! In fact, Firework looks mesmerizing to the eyes but is dangerous if not handled with care.

Make this Diwali healthy and safe for you and your close ones; here are a few tips to have safe celebrations with precautions.

Safety Tips to Make Your Diwali happy and safe!

1. Store firecrackers in a safe space that is out of children’s reach.

Firecrackers are unavoidable on Diwali because of kids around, for the dazzling fireworks are the sight of their happiness. This is when we need to take extra care of our children and keep these crackers away from their reach to avoid accidents. Firecrackers should be kept in a closed box.

2. Brust firecrackers very carefully.

There should be a certain level of physical distance while lighting the firecrackers. We should keep it away from our hands and burn it with utmost care. Ignorance can lead to causation and severe burns.

3. Always light crackers in an open space.

The spark of crackers is quick and unknown. You can never predict the flow of sparks after burning a few specific crackers, so it’s a healthy suggestion to burn crackers in an open space for safety purposes. Also, the smoke in a packed space can suffocate, which isn’t good for health. We always urge people not to burn crackers and make them safer for themselves and the environment.

4. Elders should assist children at the time of bursting crackers.

It’s dangerous to leave your kids and children alone when bursting firecrackers. We might witness some unforeseen situation with an emergency. Elders and guardians should surround children to handle the situations in case of critical Emergencies and accidents.

5. Always buy crackers from a licensed shop.

Every year we hear cases of severe accidents at the time of Diwali. Serious burns and wounds from untimely and strange crackers burst after lighting and killing people. We should be very sure of shops and markets from where we buy crackers and more. The sale of crackers is regulated under the Explosive Act’s provisions of the Explosive Rules 2008.

6. Place diyas and candles in the right spot which doesn’t catch fire.

Following traditional beliefs and cultural practices, we lit lamps, diyas, and candles at every corner of the house, which we cannot ignore. It’s the day of luminous beauty and coming together to light enough to beat the night’s darkness, as per this festival’s meaning. Here, we need to focus on placing candles and diyas in the right corner where there’s no direct contact with curtains, clothes, electric wires, or anything which catches fire. Keep looking for places at intervals where they are kept to avoid fire and burns.

7. Keep the fire extinguisher to your nearest reach.

A fire extinguisher should be kept in close contact to use at the time of Emergency. One or two fire extinguishers should be a must in every house. Spending money buying a fire extinguisher is a sane investment to keep oneself safe. If you cannot afford it, always keep a bucket of water and sand ready to put out the fire.

8. A bucket of water and unused blankets should be there.

Heavy flow and slaps of water can help control the spread of fire; never throw water on electric wires directly, as it can worsen the situation. Use thick layer blankets to wrap and protect people and control the fire.

9. Dress rightly at the time of burning crackers.

We get ready to celebrate because we have our festive reasons to get our best attire on and enjoy the festival thoroughly. We prefer wearing light clothes when burning crackers to avoid accidents. Wear your best traditional outfit and have a good time, but when you are near firecrackers and candles, be sure that clothes do not catch fire.

10. Food safety

Excessive eating is the other side of the coin at the time occasion. Consuming sweets from outside can be hazardous because, due to the heavy demand in the market, the quality is compromised with low-quality ingredients and unhygienic ways of making them. Even if you are consuming homemade food, don’t overeat. It leads to many uncalled health issues.

11. Extra attention to children and elders.

The loud sound and heavy smoke of bursting crackers aren’t healthy for elders as it causes discomfort and uneasiness. Children are tricky to handle with their excitement level in festive moods, so it’s essential to look after them, so they don’t encounter mishappening. Discarding oneself from bursting fireworks is the wisest move. It’s safe and healthy for everyone because Diwali is more about celebrations, family, food, memory, traditions, and light than polluting the atmosphere and making it tough to breathe in toxic air.

12. Never use sanitizers before bursting crackers.

Due to covid, we practice using sanitizer every next hour to keep it safe. It will be the biggest mistake if we do that now before using sanitizer as sanitizer contains 60-95% of alcohol which is highly flammable. Firecrackers and sanitizers are a combination of the disaster which would badly injure people. BEWARE! Don’t use sanitizer at the time of lighting and firecrackers.

13. Keep a first aid kit handy.

Keep the first aid box available and prepared to avoid severe burns and injuries. Make it visible so people can quickly grab and use it in their time of need. A first aid box is essential for pre-hospital care as it can treat victims and provide medical care.
